Next, in Year 2s team building unit, they worked together in different groups to make different pictures out of the equipment. They tried to use phrases like "how about we try this way?" And "first we will try this way, then we will try that way"

With all the festivities starting in school, Year 3 and 4 took to opportunity to spend some time outside with the snow! It definitely is beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Thornbury.

Year 1 were thrilled when it started snowing! We could not resist going outside to play! We had a lovely time and said it was the best day ever!

In PE, Year 2 have been working in teams to overcome problems. In different sized groups we have tried to pass through hula hoops in a circle. We then made it harder by adding more hoops.

On Friday 15th November we celebrated this year’s BBC Children in Need day. Our school was excited to be joining with many others around the UK to participate in the fundraising programme. It was so lovely to see so many bright colours and spots across the school. A huge thank you to all parents and carers who donated to this wonderful cause.

Year 1 Linnets had a 'Super' time in PSHE on Children In Need day

On Monday, we arrived to school and found some ingredients with a sign that said 'make me'... What happened next?

In Literacy, Year 5 and 6 are learning about the text Shackleton's Journey. We have created a timeline of events and today, created freezeframes of the most important events. We then developed this by coming out of the freeze frames to explain how our character was feeling at the time.

Our newly appointed Connect Academy Councillors met with other members of the Connect Academy Council today. They spoke about things that were important to them about their school as well as hearing about new exciting initiatives that they would like to bring back to Thornbury.

Year 3 and 4 have started their brand-new unit of Dance work in PE, in which we will create dances with the theme of 'cold places'. In our first lesson, we thought about the movements of penguins, and used actions such as the slide, waddle and glide! The children had such fun!

Year 6 have marked Remembrance today with such maturity. We are really proud of them and they performed both their songs and lines brilliantly!

Our Welly Wednesday session today was linked to our learning about important celebrations happening this week (Diwali and Bonfire Night). Have a look at our final creations.

Year 6 have been looking at Animalium and The Wonder Garden in literacy. They have made their own animal non-chronological reports merging facts with amazing description, emerging the reader into the animal's world. The children have taken real pride in their work, and think you'll agree they look fantastic!

We want to say a huge thank you for everyone who came to support our cake sale on Tuesday 22nd October. A special thank you to Miss Potts and Mrs Rafferty for putting on such a spectacular event.

Today in Foundation, we have been artists! We began by exploring the artwork of artist Andy Goldsworthy. We noticed that he used different coloured rocks, leaves and natural objects. We found out this is called a sculpture. We walked around the whole school searching and organising different coloured leaves. Finally we worked together to create our own class sculpture! What do you think?

This term, in Year 3 and 4 we will be creating our own self-portraits inspired by Pablo Picasso's 1937 painting called 'Weeping Women'. Have a look at some of our work from today's lesson!

Year 2 have been exploring the artist Henri Matisse and how he uses lines to express emotions in his portraits. The children have observed their facial features and planned their portraits. They have had to be Resilient Lions, when they found copying their features challenging.

Year 2 have been exploring the properties of every day materials, in Science. They squashed, bent, twisted and stretched different materials then documented their results.

Tomorrow is European Languages Day! In school, we will be working extremely hard to celebrate the day! Watch this space and we shall share some of the wonderful learning opportunities.

Year 5 have come to the end of their place value unit. Today the children spent some time practicing some different areas of place value. It was wonderful to see the children practice their skills.

This term, Year 1 are exploring 'The Green Line' by Henri Matisse. to understand how he used line and colour, they began the unit by re-creating their own versions of his portrait. Have a look at some of their beautiful creations.

As we complete our first full week, we wanted to say a huge well done! You have all settled well into Thornbury Primary School and all the new routines. We have already seen so many Friendly Otters and Resilient Lions. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you again on Monday.

In Year 5, we have started our PE unit of Hockey. We watched a professional hockey game and then had a practice using the hockey sticks to try and controls all. We had to carefully dribble a ball around a cone.

This week the children in Year 5 and 6 have spent the afternoon the Foundation sharing the beautiful work they had created in their PSHE lesson.

Last week, our Year 5’s joined other schools at Tor Bridge High for a Big Sing. They had worked so hard on the songs and enjoyed being able to perform with others.

As part of our book week celebrations, this afternoon all the children participated in a book sharing. Here are some photos from when the Year 5 came to visit the children in Foundation. The Foundation children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Year 5 children read a story. There was such a wonderful feel of excitement across the school as we all celebrated our love of books and reading.

Year 5 had the opportunity to complete a week of special Bikeability training to prepare them for riding on the road!

We are delighted to announce that we, Thornbury Primary School, have achieved School Games Platinum Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year.

We were joined by a Dartmoor guide and was shown around the Anglo-Saxon village of Lydford.

Yesterday some KS2 students had the opportunity to participate in a rowing event on Plymouth Hoe. They all tried there hardest and worked well as a team, along with rowing they took part in a VR experience of our very own dockyard and even tried their hands at the field gun experience. They all enjoyed the experience, and the staff were proud of all there hard work and determination shown throughout the day.

Yesterday, the children in Foundation visited the National Marine Aquarium. It was an incredible day!We started by having a tour of the aquarium. We learnt lots of new science words like camouflage and habitat. We found lots of different creatures who use camouflage to hide from their predators. We were set the challenge to find different habitats. In one tank we found the rocks, sandy floor and open waters.Did you know an octopus has 3 hearts and 9 brains. In the afternoon, we were Ocean Scientists! We conducted 3 ocean experiments. We had to predict what would happen. We know predict means to have a good guess. We had to talk about what we could see! Well done Foundation for being Connecting Spiders!

Have a look at some of our creations! Following the request to create art outside, today we were weaving with natural objects. We had to be Focused Foxes as we followed the weaving pattern (over and under). Well done Art Club!

On Friday, the Year 5/6 boys and girl's did us proud at the Connect Games Football Tournament, hosted at Leigham Primary School. Despite tough opposition, they showed true grit and determination throguhout.

What an amazing day we have had!! We began our day by rock pooling on Mount Batten beach and visiting the National Marine Aquarium

Last week the art club talked about the kind of art they would like to create during their club time. Creating art outside and using clay were the top hits! Yesterday, they combined these ideas and created clay faces in the meadow. They used the natural materials around them to add detail to their faces. Look at these beautiful creations.

Today we celebrated Ocean Art Day across the whole school. To mark this occasion, every year group created a collaborative piece of art inspired by local artists.

This week, Year 1 and 2 have enjoyed their trip to The Box. They were Connecting Spiders as they made links to their prior learning and Curious Cats as they asked questions to find out new information.

What a wonderful day we had on Wednesday for our sports day!

Today was 'Victorian Day' for Years 5 & 6. They had a brilliant time making their own Victorian medicines, developing their own sun photographs and creating some silhouette art! I think you'll agree they look fantastic!!

This week the children in Foundation have been Resilient Lions in the Balance Bikeability sessions. Today they were practising taking their feet off the floor as they passed over the ‘river’! Have a look at some of their amazing skills. Well done Foundation!

A huge thank you to Plymouth Dental Peninsula and Smarter Smiles who came into Year 2 this afternoon. We enjoyed hearing all about how to take care of our teeth. 🦷

This morning, Year 1 and 2 were grateful for some sunshine as they went on a walk in our local area. They used their their geographic skills to identify human and physical features. Then they used symbols and a key to mark them on a map. They were also lucky enough to have enough time to play at the local park.

On Friday, Year 4 had two Plymouth University students came in to teach the children some different sounds in French. The children were Responsible Rainbow Trouts, showing good listening and engaged in sharing ideas. Well Done to the children and the Plymouth University students! Merci!

A huge thank you to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service who came to visit Year 2 and Year 5 today. The children were taught about hazards in the home, fire safety and fire prevention. It was a really interesting session and the children asked lots of super questions. Well done Year 2 and 5 for being Curious Cats and Focused Foxes this afternoon.

Today, a fantastic team of 12 Year 2 children attended the multiskills event at Tor Bridge High School. The children were put through their paces across a variety of activities and rose to the challenge. We are really proud of how well they represented the school. Well done Year 2!

6 Children from Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 had the chance to represent Thornbury Primary at the KS1 Change for Life sports event today. A huge thank you to Plymouth School Sports Partnership for hosting such an amazing day. The children took part in a range of exciting activities, using lots of different skills. They worked in teams and individually and even had a Q&A at the end of the day was with European champion surfer Emily Currie.

On Friday, Mrs Summerfield took some of the Year 4 Girls football team to Marjon University for a girl's football festival. The girls played 5 matches, winning two, drawing one and losing two. Overall, they came in 3rd position, just missing out on the county finals. The girls each received a 3rd place medal and certificates. Well done girls!
