Geography

Our aim at Thornbury Primary School is to inspire children’s curiosity, interest and appreciation for the world that we live in. We intend to equip children with the geographical knowledge to develop their skills through studies of places, people and natural and human environments.

A high-quality geography education inspires in pupils, a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our teaching aims to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. In our curriculum, we use our stunning local environment to enhance our curriculum. We learn about how our oceans and seas are connected through the Oceans Curriculum and our role in protecting the oceans for future generations to come.

What geographical skills are taught?

Our curriculum provides children with an opportunity to experience all geographical concepts and skills.

Geographical concepts include physical, human, location and place. The key geographical skills include compassing, mapping and fieldwork. For more information, please see our progression document (right hand side of this page). Here you will see how the children build on these skills as they progress through the school.

How do we ensure that all pupils have equality of access to the full curriculum?

Lessons and activities are planned to include all children, regardless of need or barrier, by using a range of approaches. This includes: questioning, use of equipment, and mixed ability grouping to enable children to offer peer support. Widgit symbols are introduce new vocabulary. These symbols are used consistently across the school to support retrieval. We also use symbols within our lessons to help with recall of prior learning. Maps and rucksacks within books give the children opportunities to remind themselves of what we have already learnt. Lessons are tailored to individual needs and lessons are planned to facilitate the best possible outcome for all children.
