PE is seen as in important part of the curriculum, enabling pupils to develop physically, mentally, creatively and socially. We feel that it is important for children to understand the reasons for participating in sport so they can have a healthy lifestyle and continue to enjoy sport long after they have left school. It is an opportunity for children to make friends, learn to work together in a team situation to achieve their goals, adapting to different situations by taking on various roles.
Thornbury Primary School is committed to providing two hours of high quality Physical Education. Foundation stage pupils start physical activity by using the ‘Leap into Life Programme’ and exploring the outdoor environment. Children in Years 1 and Year 2 participate in Gymnastics, dance and games. As pupils move into Keystage 2 they undertake a variety of sports like, netball, football, Tag Rugby, hockey, athletics, cricket and rounder’s. We assess pupils skills by using the ‘Funs’ programme before and after a module so children can build on the skills they have learnt. Children in Years 5 & 6 also take part in swimming at the life centre. Children in year 5 also have the opportunity to gain a level 2 in riding a bike when they complete a course of ‘bikeability’.
At Thornbury Primary we have a great many sporting clubs. We ask the pupils which clubs they would like to see running so a different club could be offered each term. At the moment these include Year one and two multi skills, football, netball, dance and running.
There is also the opportunity for children to represent Thornbury in many sporting teams at family events held at Torbridge High and on a city wide level. These events are held regularly and are for a variety of pupils so that most children have a chance to represent the school in different sports.
We recognise that sport plays a vital role in a child’s development to stay fit and healthy as they develop through our school. Our school endeavours to make sport available for all so all children have the opportunity to enjoy different activities and have the confidence to try new ones.
