We are part of a British society, and it is important to Thornbury Primary School that children learn the universal principles of:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
These values underpin the work of the Connect Academy Trust (CAT).
We achieve these aims through:
Creating an open, inclusive ethos whereby children can be themselves, and develop courtesy, respect and tolerance for others
Promoting mental health and wellbeing
Promoting equality of opportunity
Having a clear code of conduct, whereby children understand right from wrong, and are able to take responsibility for their actions
Team work and collaboration across the school
Development of pupil leadership and pupil voice
Promotion of service families
Challenging intolerance
Providing a broad and balanced Curriculum:
- Opportunities that celebrate the golden threads which appear in every unit of work, such as diversity, the role of women, oracy and values
- Responding to current affairs such as General elections and Royal celebrations
- Learning about our nation and its heritage, for example, Plymouth as a Port and in the Blitz, the First World War topic and Remembrance Day, Victorians and the impact of time periods on lives today
- Famous National people such as Captain Scott, Sir Francis Drake
- Use of our local area
- A sense of community responsibility; working with other agencies such as the police and fire service and supporting local / national charities
- Learning about cultures and faiths; how are we different from one another, and how are we the same?
- Understanding Plymouth as part of a global community; learning about and communicating with children from across the world
